Verizon’s ‘5G Nationwide’ is now available on prepaid iPhone 12

Verizon launched its ‘5G Nationwide’ network coverage for most postpaid customers in October, along with the launch of the latest Apple smartphones. Verizon has now confirmed for 9to5Mac that its national 5G network is also available for use with 5G phones, including iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, in the company’s own prepaid service …

The same sub-6 GHz network that Verizon’s postpaid plans enjoy is now available to those using prepaid. It is presumably compatible finally with the 5G phones that Verizon currently sells through its prepaid website, which includes the iPhone 12 and Galaxy S20 FE 5G series. We are currently seeing this live on an iPhone 12 Pro.

5G are fundamentally two different technologies, and while it appears that the switch has been switched to the slower form of sub-6 GHz (5G Nationwide), Verizon says its Ultra Wideband offerings are “coming to prepaid in early 2021 “, at least according to verbiage on the company’s prepaid website.

While you’re always welcome to gain access to the latest technologies, the first tests conducted this week show that Verizon’s 5G Nationwide network is not really faster than LTE in some places. In my area, however, I have found that Verizon’s national 5G network is substantially faster than LTE.

Competing networks, such as T-Mobile and AT&T, have been offering sub-6 5G service for several months, now on their own equivalent to Verizon’s 5G Nationwide. The popular MVNO (virtual mobile network operator) Visible, which runs on the Verizon network, recently launched its sub-6 5G on the iPhone 12, and this device is the only one compatible with that network so far.
