‘Venom 2’ release date postponed to September

Sony Pictures again delayed the release of “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” in theaters. The superhero sequel – starring Tom Hardy – will now open on the big screen on September 17.

The sequel to “Venom” was postponed several times during the pandemic and was most recently scheduled for June 25. Despite the reopening of theaters in Los Angeles and New York, it is not entirely unexpected that “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” has been moved back. Universal had recently changed its sequel to “Fast and Furious”, “F9” for the end of June, so the two tents would have been opened the same weekend and competed for the attention of young males. As the box office has slowly recovered, at least in North America, the commercial prospects for a possible blockbuster, let alone two on a weekend, in the summer are uncertain.

With its release date in mid-September, the sequel to “Venom” has space between “The Suicide Squad” on August 6 and the remake of “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve on October 1. On September 17, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” will debut alongside the star-studded murder mystery “Death on the Nile” and Universal’s animated children’s film “The Boss Baby: Family Business”.

Along with the delay of “Venom”, Sony removed “Man From Toronto”, an action comedy with Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, from the release schedule. It was originally scheduled for September 17.

Andy Serkis is directing the follow-up to “Venom”, which sees Hardy reprise his role as the titular alien symbiote. The original 2018 film became a surprise box office hit, grossing $ 855 million worldwide. Harrelson, Michelle Williams, Reid Scott and Naomie Harris will also appear in the sequel.
