Vegan KitKat: Nestlé’s newest chocolate bar is missing a key ingredient

Nestlé is launching a non-dairy version of the popular chocolate bar, called KitKat V. The Swiss company is joining the trend of alternative vegetable-based foods. Nestlé promises that the new sweet still has the “perfect balance between crispy wafer and soft chocolate”.
KitKat V dispenses milk, which is used in its regular KitKats, for a rice-based alternative, in addition to its new sustainable cocoa, according to Bloomberg. The new bar will start to be sold later this year in several countries at selected retailers before expanding worldwide.
Nestlé is launching a KitKat vegan chocolate bar this year.

“Taste was a key factor in the development of plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat,” said Louise Barrett, head of the Nestlé Confectionery Technology Center, in a statement. “We used our expertise in ingredients, along with a testing and learning approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat.”

Herbal foods are spreading out to be meat and milk. In 2019, Mars launched a line of vegan chocolate bars as a way to attract consumers who want to reduce meat and dairy consumption for health and environmental reasons. Other manufacturers, like Lindt and Cadbury, have also recently launched vegan sweets.

The trend, according to Alexander von Maillot, head of Nestlé’s confectionery, continues to grow.

“There is a silent food revolution going on that is changing the way people eat. We want to be at the forefront of this, advocating the discovery of plant-based foods and drinks,” he said in the statement.
