The unidentified individual did not fill out a registration card associated with his test, so employees cannot track him, said PHE. You are asking anyone who took a test on February 12 or 13 and did not receive the result “or have an incomplete test registration card” to contact.
Speaking to Sky News on Monday, UK vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi believes the individual “would likely receive a home kit or test kit from the local authority”.
The two other cases identified in England are from a family in the Gloucestershire region with a history of travel to Brazil, PHE said. The two people “are isolating themselves correctly” and there are “minimal reasons to believe there may be more spread,” added Zahawi.
Contract trackers are contacting all passengers on the Swiss Air LX318 flight from São Paulo via Zurich, which landed in London on February 10. All will be tested in their homes, said PHE.
“The continued refusal to implement a comprehensive system leaves us exposed to mutations and new variants that arrive in our country from abroad. The same mistakes repeatedly,” she added.
The P.1 variant is suspected of fueling the resurgence of viral spread in Brazil. It was found in 42% of the specimens in a survey conducted in Manaus and since then, cases have emerged in the USA and Japan.
The P.1 variant has mutations in common with the variant identified in South Africa, which may mean that it is more contagious and may help it to escape vaccines. “It is possible that this variant responds less well to current vaccines, but more work is needed to understand this,” said PHE on Sunday.
“Recent reports from Manaus, Brazil, where variant P.1 is increasing the number of infections, suggest that this variant is responsible for reinfecting individuals who were previously infected with a different variant of the virus,” said Lawrence Young, professor of oncology molecular at Warwick Medical School, said in a statement sent by the UK’s Science Media Center.
“That is why it is even more important to do everything to prevent the spread of this virus and all other variants, including strict border controls and an efficient testing, tracking and isolation system,” he said.
