Vanessa Kirby talked about her process when playing the lead role in the latest film Pieces Of A Woman.

The 32-year-old actress plays her mother Martha Weiss, who is mourning the death of her baby daughter in labor, in the Kornel Mundruczo drama.

Vanessa at Crown admitted that she felt an enormous sense of ‘responsibility’ in telling a story that is rarely shown on the screen.

She said: ‘Looking back, I knew that it was my responsibility to honor the women who told me their stories about the loss of a child at any stage of pregnancy – or right after birth.

‘The whole time I was filming, I felt connected to them and as if it were for them, because their story had not been told before …

‘My biggest challenge involved trying to incorporate and do justice to the feelings of the women I spoke to. That’s all I focused on. Accessing the grieving level was a big challenge, because I don’t have a child, but I wanted to accurately represent their experiences. ‘

Vanessa is ‘very proud’ of the final film – which also stars Shia LaBeouf and Molly Parker – and believes that viewers will be able to relate to the ‘universal emotion’ that is pain.

She added: ‘This is a film about mourning, a very universal emotion – and yet the film has an incredibly intimate quality. I am very proud of that.

‘To be honest, it was one of the best shooting experiences of my life.’

Vanessa admitted that filming her character’s work was emotionally draining.

She said: ‘I wanted to make a delivery scene that was as authentic as possible.

“I felt the duty of all mothers to try to represent this on the screen in a real and raw way.

“After filming, I was so moved that I remember Kornel giving me a big hug for about three minutes while I was crying.

‘I remember thinking, I need to retain this, I need to retain that feeling.’
