Vanessa Kirby and Katherine Waterston in The World to Come

Also, why they liked to shoot and what they loved about the script by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard.

With director Mona Fastvold’s The world to come now playing in some cinemas and arriving on Demand on March 2nd, recently I was able to speak to Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby about doing your period drama with an LGBTQ theme. Written by Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard and based on the story of Shepard of the same name, the film takes place on a farm in upstate New York in the 1850s, where Abigail (Waterston), a farmer’s wife, and her new neighbor Tallie (Kirby) feel attracted to each other. The world to come also stars Christopher Abbott as Kirby’s husband and Casey Affleck as Waterston’s wife.

During the relaxed interview, Waterston and Kirby talked about what it was like to film in the countryside of Romania, their reaction to reading the script by Hansen and Shepard, how the film takes place at a time when people had to spend all their time trying to survive and love was a luxury, why Kirby felt very much in tune with her character, why Waterston didn’t want the filming to end and more.

Check out what they said in the player above and below is exactly what we said and the official synopsis.

Here is the official synopsis:

In this powerful 19th-century novel set in the Northeast, Abigail (Katherine Waterston), the wife of a farmer, and her new neighbor Tallie (Vanessa Kirby) are irrevocably attracted to each other. A bereaved Abigail cares for her withdrawn husband Dyer (Casey Affleck) while free-spirited Tallie is irritated by her husband’s jealous control Finney (Christopher Abbott), when together their intimacy begins to fill a void in each other’s lives that they never they knew it existed. Directed by Mona Fastvold and scripted by Jim Shepard and Ron Hansen, The World to Come explores how isolation is overcome by the intensity of human connection.
