Valorant Patch 2.01: Jett’s nerfs, updates and split map changes

After its big update last week, which included an entirely new agent, Valorant is already back with another patch. This time, there is a slight nerf in Jett, but the main focus of this patch is a massive revision of the Split map, which has consistently been one of the players’ least favorite maps.

When Split was first released, it was an excellent example of some of Valorantmajor map design issues. It relied too much on artificial angles created by strange cubicle areas in the corridors and had bomb locations that were very open. This made transitions from one location to another incredibly slow and also resulted in location and post-plant shots that looked a little bit alike. Fortunately, it seems that Riot felt that way too.

In this second round of major map updates, the developer has cleared some of Split’s weird angles and cramped doors in favor of more open spaces that provide players with a little more information while on the move. Most importantly, Riot has also carefully increased the coverage of the Split bomb sites, which should lead to significantly more interesting fights around them.

Agent updates

Jett

  • The duration of the smoke decreased 7 >>> 4,5

In a continuation of the Patch 2.0 controller changes, we felt it was important to consider Jett’s cigarettes as well. In Patch 1.0, we increased the duration of Jett’s smoke to 7 seconds (from then 4 seconds), and we are partially undoing that now. We found that the result of this change was that Jett became a replacement for the Controller role, and reasonably aggressive teams could use their Cloudburst smoke to take up space quickly without relying on a dedicated Controller. This is part of a pattern of Duelists replacing Agents more focused on utilities that we will continue to look at in the future. It is important that Jett can use his fumes to create temporary windows for the high-action moves that define his style, but those windows need to be brief enough to ensure that the Controllers are where the teams are looking for the team-focused view block.

Map updates

Divided

This Split update is focused on improving the attacker’s options on the map, as well as reducing 50/50 checks, the depth of certain corners and opening specific areas on the map by increasing the width of the choke points.

Increased width of main door B

  • This should make the space easier for attackers to navigate and make it harder for defenders to lock attackers at the choke point. There is a box for intruders to use on the other side of the doors as a cover, which allows the utility to be launched at a new angle.
