Valheim’s dedicated servers should have lower latency now

The wolves of Valheim will breed less now, which is good news if the population hovering around the Viking survival sim has smashed it to pieces many times. This change comes through update 0.147.3, which is perhaps more interesting with “major changes for dedicated servers”.

These changes soon? Most players should have a lower latency now when playing on dedicated servers. Less brief: this is because the game now uses direct connections instead of Steam Datagram Relay (SDR). The SDR is advertised as a way to transport game traffic over the Valve network, making it faster and safer, although it appears that this is not the case for Valheim players. The game’s patch notes note that a beta version of the Steam client is now available that can fix some of the problems with SDR.

All other changes in this version are minor fixes, although there is no mention of my recently reported Valheim bug:

I didn’t see it in action, but as I hope it will be true, and as I hope there will be a video of these seagulls soon.

Until then, if you want to take advantage of the lowest latency, Ollie has a guide on how to set up your own dedicated Valheim server.
