Valheim’s dedicated server update appears to break dedicated servers

Valheim’s most recent update includes a lot of pretty mundane technical changes, but they add up to something exciting for dedicated server users – less lag. This patch made changes to how the connections to dedicated servers work, and although that should mean a better experience on those servers, several players are having trouble connecting to them.

“Today’s patch has major changes to dedicated servers,” say the developers in the announcement. “Dedicated servers now always use direct connections instead of using Steam Datagram Relay (SDR). This should result in much lower latency for most players. Private dedicated servers are enabled by adding ‘-public 0’ to the server’s command line. “

The problem is that players are now experiencing a ‘disconnect’ error when trying to connect to dedicated servers, and it is unclear why. Some hosts have succeeded in uninstalling and reinstalling the server software – or simply restarting – but not all. Others have succeeded in opening additional doors – but again, not all.

Players have reported the issue on Reddit threads, Steam forum threads and the official Discord. The developers are certainly aware – there is an open problem in the official bug tracker – but, for now, there is no clear indication as to what is causing the problem or when it is being fixed.
