Valheim sold heroic 3 million copies

Welcome back to another round of big numbers for Valheim, the last little indie game you could. Iron Gate Studio’s Viking survival and craft game sold one million copies in its first week, two million in less than two weeks and now three million a few days after that. Impressed as I am, I would rather play in Valheim now than tell you about the sales figures, so I did us all a favor and projected the next two milestones. You’re welcome.

Iron Gate announced that to date, Valheim has sold more than three million copies and has collected over 60,000 user ratings on Steam. It peaked at 147,000 viewers on Twitch on Wednesday, they say. I can’t imagine the small studio could expect that level of popularity at launch.

“We have always assumed that the EA launch would be somewhat successful, so I think that does not change our plans much,” said Iron Gate CEO Richard Svensson. “Except that maybe we can afford a bigger office now.” Maybe they can build a whole longhouse, huh?

Having suddenly been inundated with Valheim’s rise to prominence, I suspect that Dag Svensson may be running out of things to say about each milestone, just like me. So to save both of us from becoming Valheim salespeople, I went ahead and planned Valheim Sales Numbers for the next two months. The next time you’re curious to see how many copies Valheim has sold, just stop by to check. It is a proven correct projection because I made it in Microsoft Excel.

As you can see here, Valheim is scheduled to reach approximately four million sales this weekend, while I will try to build my first ship. It will reach eight million around my birthday in early March. As a birthday present, I’ll just point this post here instead of writing a new one. Valheim will double that number to 16 million about a month later, in April.

I challenge you to do better, and by “daring” I mean “begging” because I am not a numbers professional.

I would like to give you a full projection for the entire next year of Valheim sales, but my Excel skills are rudimentary and I was unable to convince the damn thing to make ever more speculative projections based on my tiny and slightly dataset manufactured. I need to finish this post before it becomes irrelevant when the game reaches four million sales, so let’s use our imagination and say that every person on earth will have a copy next year, right?

Jokes aside, three million copies sold for an early access game made by a team of five is a real achievement. Now that I have made a little commitment as a Viking, I will not envy the attention. The first few hours gave me the feel of Minecraft around 2014, when all my friends were paling on the servers, building wooden huts and just enjoying being in the same game at the same time. Itches that itch that apparently 3 million of us still haven’t completely shaken.
