Valheim reaches 2 million copies sold in less than two weeks

Last week, the survival game Viking Crafting Valheim proudly announced that it had sold over a million copies, a good achievement for an early access game. Well, Valheim is not finished yet and is about to impress Odin properly, doubling that number less than a week later. Valheim has now sold more than 2 million copies and has exploded its number of simultaneous Vikings to match.

Valheim’s developers, Iron Gate Studio, have announced that they have sold more than 2 million copies and have set a new record for 360,000 simultaneous players over the weekend. This is more than double the record of 160,000 last week.

“We really didn’t anticipate that,” said Iron Gate CEO Richard Svesson. “Our goal was to cover our development costs so that we could continue to exist as a studio and continue to work in Valheim. I think our future is safe for a while now.”

“Valheim has not been rushed, it is a product of more than three years of iterative development with added features and tested in a core team of first users,” adds Svesson. “Besides, as a designer, I don’t like to follow popular conventions, but I try to go my own way, it seems that it worked.

In fact, it seems to have worked. Valheim is currently reaching a 96% recommendation rate for over 37,000 user reviews on Steam, two more impressive numbers for an early access game.

Will I be the first to admit that my initial reaction to Valheim was “bah, who wants an earlier survival of crafts?” I thought I got tired of the usual techniques, but I really like to build forts and destroy villains while my friends scream near me, so I confess that I caught a case of envy. Damn, seeing other people having fun on the internet was what led me to Phasmophobia, which I will not shut up now. I think I’ll see you back here in about a week. Hold my mead and everything.

Valheim is planning to stay in early access for at least a year. Iron Gate has plans for four updates over the course of 2021 in its roadmap, including a new Mistlands biome for its procedurally generated purgatory.
