Four months after legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen lost his battle with cancer, his ex-wife Valerie Bertinelli continues to struggle with the loss. But in a new interview with Today, a Food chain star explained that she is “embarrassed by the pain” of her reactions to his death.
“It’s weird. The shame of grief is something I never thought would happen to me. I don’t want to talk about it now, but I’ve known the man for 40 years. I was 20 when I met him. I still loved him,” Valerie said as she cried. “We spent a lot of time together. He is the father of my son. He is the father of the greatest gift of my life.”
Her 29-year-old son, Wolfgang, was also open about his grieving process, which said the loss of his father “will always hurt”.
Valerie and Eddie were married for 26 years and divorced in 2007. Two years later, Eddie married Janie Liszewski; Valerie also remarried, tying the knot with Tom Vitale in 2011. Despite the separation, the ex-couple remained close while he was the father of their son.
“I miss him. And I can miss him,” said Valerie. “He was a big part of my life. Just because we loved each other didn’t diminish the love he had for Janie or me for Tom, so it’s a different kind of love. I don’t know how to explain it. ”

In January, Valerie talked about how difficult the loss was for her entire family. “It has been difficult – very bittersweet, [but] we’re doing well, ”she said as she held back tears. “Your Difficult. I’ve texted him a few dozen times and it’s like, ‘Oh, no, I can’t text him right now.’ “
After the devastating news of Eddie’s death, Valerie paid tribute to her ex-husband in an emotional tribute on Instagram. She shared a photo of her, Eddie and a baby Wolfgang, writing the caption that her “life changed forever” when she met the guitarist in 1980.
“You gave me the only true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang,” she said. “Through all of your challenging lung cancer treatments, you kept your beautiful spirit and that mischievous smile. I am very grateful to Wolfie and for being able to embrace him in his last moments. I will see you in our next life, my love. “
