‘Vaccine passports’ could be used in the UK, said a senior official

UK residents may have to present so-called COVID-19 vaccine passports to enter bars and supermarkets, a senior official said on Sunday.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said the government had not “ruled out” the requirement for proof of vaccination to enter stores.

“It is something that has not been discarded and is under consideration, but of course you have to make it viable,” Raab told LBC Radio.

“Whether at international, national or local level, you need to know that the document presented is something that can be trusted and that it is an accurate reflection of the individual’s situation,” he added.

But other members of parliament rejected the possibility on Sunday.

Mark Harper, who chairs the Covid Recovery Group, argued that the UK should not “get to a position where we tell people that they cannot do anything unless they have been vaccinated with Covid”.

“For everyday life, I don’t think you want to demand that people have to undergo a specific medical procedure before they can take care of their daily lives,” he told the station. “This is not how we do things in Britain.”
