Vaccination updates as Michigan prepares to expand to people aged 50 and over

Michigan municipalities reported some signs of progress in the effort to vaccinate people to reduce transmission of COVID-19 this week, with several saying they expect an increase in vaccine supplies that will allow them to vaccinate more people.

On Wednesday, March 3, Michigan announced that it will be eligible for vaccinations for people aged 50 and over, with certain requirements, starting on Monday, March 8.

Residents aged 50 and over who have “pre-existing illnesses, disabilities and other medical vulnerabilities” will become eligible on Monday, March 8, confirmed Bobby Leddy, press secretary to Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Two weeks later, starting March 22, all residents aged 50 and over will be eligible, said the governor’s office.

Opening the state in an eligible manner does not mean that all counties will begin receiving patients from that group immediately. Some counties have not released full details of local implementations and when vaccines will be available to people aged 50 and over.

Health officials are still working to complete vaccinations for people in the vaccination phase, which includes people aged 65 and over and others. About half of Michigan residents aged 65 and over have already been vaccinated.
