Vaccination situation in rural areas raises concern in South Carolina

WINDSOR, SC (WRDW / WAGT) – South Carolina health officials want to ensure that COVID-19 vaccines are distributed to rural communities in need, such as Windsor.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control released new information showing how many vaccines were administered per county.

More than 12,000 people have been vaccinated in Aiken County, but more rural and smaller counties have worried state health officials.

For example, here are the numbers for some other local counties:

  • Edgefield: 2,563
  • Saluda: 1,233
  • Barnwell: 1,075
  • Bamberg: 1,022

“We, the state, have work to do, given our original type of city-centered approach for health workers,” Nick Davidson, senior deputy for public health, told DHEC commissioners this week.

Earlier this week, South Carolina state senators moved forward with a $ 208 million COVID-19 bill that would finance clinics and vaccine distributions – especially in rural areas. The project is now being sent to the state chamber.

Among the rural areas that were highlighted this week was Windsor, in Aiken County, where a vaccination clinic was held on Thursday at the fire station.

Rural Health Services worked with local leaders to make this happen.

Organizers say they want to give everyone a chance to take the photo.

“There is a lot of news about people in rural areas who do not have access to the vaccine,” said Carolyn Emanuel-McClain, CEO of Rural Health Services. “We wanted to make sure that we target the countryside first and then move one in the city of Aiken.”

Rural Health Services will maintain more of these vaccine clinics in local areas of South Carolina.

The next is Thursday in Aiken County on old Bi-Lo off York Street.
