Vaccination sites opened at 2 new sites in Duval County

Two vaccination centers run by the Federal Emergency Management Agency opened on Sunday morning in Duval County.

The satellite sites moved from Westside and Northwest Jacksonville to the Carver Center on 5th Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach and the Oceanway Center on Sago Avenue West on the Northside.

According to FEMA, the venues will open from 9 am to 5 pm for 10 days – until March 23. The sites will offer the Pfizer vaccine, and up to 500 injections can be administered each day at each site.

Service locations do not require an appointment and injections will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kelsy Adams, who works in higher education, waited in her car for the Carver Center website to open. She and a friend traveled about two hours from Gainesville to be vaccinated.

“Yes, everything is full. It’s just … the medical facility and everything, you just can’t find people who have the highest priority, ”said Adams. “So let’s try [the Jacksonville Beach site]. Nothing more, we will each get some food and drive back. “

An hour before the site opened at the Carver Center, the line started to grow and envelop the building.

Those who live on the beaches said it is about accessibility.

“It’s a relief. We’ve all been waiting, so it’s good,” said Jacksonville Beach resident Liz Root. “I still want us to be cautious until most of us are vaccinated. I just don’t want it to be a MMA.”

“We need to make it available to everyone so that we can get back to doing what we need to do,” said Burl White, a resident of Ponte Vedra Beach.

There was no line at the Oceanway Center site on Sunday morning when News4Jax appeared.

The two original satellite sites at the Normandy Community Center and the Senior Center in Hammond will return for the second dose.

FEMA opened the two satellite sites in conjunction with the federally supported vaccination clinic at the Gateway Mall in Northside. The Norwood Avenue location is open from 7 am to 7 pm, seven days a week, and can administer 3,000 doses per day. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is offered at the Gateway Mall site – not at the Carver and Oceanway centers.

As of Monday, the age to qualify for vaccination drops to 60 in all Florida locations.
