Utility companies warn of potential outages in western Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Energy companies are dealing with an increase in energy demand as much of the country experiences a dangerous record cold. Some companies have implemented continuous power cuts in several states and this could affect Iowa residents.

Our coverage partner at KCCI-TV reports that companies that request continuous outages are part of what is called the “Southwest Power Pool”, formed by a group of utility companies in 14 states, including Iowa. Much of western Iowa is served by the Southwest Power Pool.

Humboldt-based Corn Belt Power Cooperative is telling customers that there may be intermittent 45-minute power outages.

MidAmerican Energy is asking its customers to conserve the use of natural gas during the extreme cold. The company said its systems are operating as expected, but the flow of natural gas to Iowa has been affected by frozen wells in the southern United States. The energy company said it is working with its biggest customers to ensure uninterrupted gas service for residential customers.

Alliant Energy said it plans to have sufficient supplies to supply natural gas and electricity to its customers.
