Rescuers in Utah rushed on Sunday to reach a skier left under an avalanche in the interior of the country the day before, officials said.
Two skiers unleashed the avalanche at around 3:30 pm Saturday in an area known as Square Top, located outside the resort boundaries near Park City Mountains Canyon Village, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

A skier escaped the avalanche and dug up to his buried friend. The skier “tried to save his friend’s life” but was forced to leave the area due to the “extreme avalanche danger”, according to the sheriff’s office.

The avalanche took place in an area known as Square Top near Park City Mountains Canyon Village, officials said.

It was not clear whether the buried skier was alive. Authorities said more information would be provided after rescuers made contact with the avalanche victim.
The effort was temporarily halted on Saturday night after treacherous conditions prevented rescue workers from reaching the area, the sheriff’s office said.
Rescue operations resumed at 7 am on Sunday with the help of a helicopter crew from the Utah Department of Public Security, the sheriff’s office. tweeted.
“We are trying to make the area safe so that people can enter the burial site,” said the sheriff’s office.
