Utah hiker slides, falls over 100 feet – and survives

A man walking in the foothills north of Salt Lake City on Sunday survived after falling over 100 feet and being trapped for hours on the edge of a cliff after losing his phone in the fall, officials said.

The 29-year-old climber was walking near the base of Ensign Peak, about a kilometer from the state capitol, when he slipped, said NBC affiliate KSL.

“He took a misstep, got very close to the edge and slipped and plunged from half the base of the cliff to the quarry,” Salt Lake City Fire Brigade Battalion Chief Mark Bednarik said, according to the station .

The man, who was not identified, injured his pelvis and leg in the fall, the department said.

Images posted by the department showed the climber perched on the edge of another steep slope.

Unable to move, he remained there for five hours after losing his phone, the department said. KSL reported that a group of homeless people heard him shout and called 911.

The video showed rescuers with harnesses lowering the man over the rest of the cliff.
