USFA: death on duty in South Carolina

A 32-year-old firefighter suffered an acute onset of a headache.

The United States Department of Fire announced the official death of firefighter / EMT Brian S. Mixson, 32, of the Jasper County Fire Department and Rescue, on March 17, 2021.

On Friday, March 5, 2021, while on duty, firefighter / paramedic Brian S. Mixson experienced an acute onset of a headache. On Sunday morning, March 7, 2021, he had a change in his vision and was rushed to the local hospital. He was then transported to the Savannah Medical Center in Savannah Georgia, and admitted to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit. As of Tuesday, March 16, 2021, there was no activity in his brain. The firefighter / EMT Mixson remained on the life support device while the medical team compiled a list of organ recipients. The headache he felt during the service was the start of a stroke. He passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.
