Facebook users took Twitter and another social media platforms on Friday to report that, for no explicit reason, they were disconnected from the big blue app. Memes and the phrase “So Facebook” quickly appeared during the incident, for which the company apologized on Saturday.

Apparently, the massive departure of an unknown number of people was due to a “change in configuration”, the company announced on Twitter. It didn’t explain much more than that. Regardless of, Engadget reported that it appeared that the people most affected by the incident were iPhone users using the version of the Facebook application. The agency said that many users who used Facebook’s two-factor SMS authentication were having trouble logging in again.

According Downdetector, which offers real-time interruption information on digital services, thousands of people reported problems with Facebook on Friday. On Saturday, reports declined dramatically. At the time of publication, 87% of the most reported problems reported were related to login.

Many users who were in this situation and used two-factor authentication ended up being able to connect again, but often had to wait a while before receiving an SMS code. Some users had to upload photos of their identity to regain access to their account, by Engadget.

Although Facebook claims to have corrected the incident on Saturday, some users still report that they were unable to log in. In response, Facebook targeted users reporting the problem on Twitter to the help center for further assistance. Interestingly, on Twitter, Facebook specifically directed users to a iPhone application help page, which could support the theory that it was an iPhone problem.

“On January 22, a change in configuration caused some people to be disconnected from their Facebook accounts,” said Facebook USA today on Saturday. “We investigated the problem and fixed it for everyone today. We apologize for the inconvenience. ”

Gizmodo contacted Facebook to ask if it had any additional comments on the matter, considering that some users are still having trouble logging into their accounts.

“We are aware that some people are having trouble logging back into their Facebook accounts after last night. Individual login issues can vary, and we encourage anyone with a problem to visit our Help Center for guidance on their specific situation, ”said a Facebook spokesperson via email, which included a link for your iPhone application help center page.
