At the state level, Texas officials reported a record hospitalization on Tuesday, with more than 11,700 Covid-19 patients across the state, while Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said a temporary hospital with an additional 60 beds can be opened in the next few days.
In Los Angeles County, hospitalizations reached the highest level and almost 7,200, almost 1,000% more than just two months ago. With the increase in the number of patients, some hospitals are running out of oxygen tanks.
“In fact, I think we are now beyond the waves or spikes and this is a viral tsunami that we are experiencing,” said epidemiologist Dr. Robert Kim-Farley.
On Monday alone, more than 1.1 million people passed through airport security checkpoints across the country, the Transportation Security Administration said.
“The next few months are going to be terrible,” said Dr. Jonathan Reiner, professor of medicine at George Washington University. “We are going to lose 3,000, maybe more people a day, probably by the beginning of February. And then, we should start to see some light.”
And while ongoing vaccines continue to offer hope, the process is taking longer than many health officials expected and will likely be months before the country begins to see a significant impact, experts said.
Slower vaccinations than the authorities expected
But Trump administration officials told CNN that the vaccine’s distribution is on track and attributed the gap to the delay in disclosure data.
However, Dr. Celine Gounder, a member of the Covid-19 advisory board for the Biden-Harris transition, said vaccinations are advancing “clearly at an unacceptable pace”.
“Basically, we vaccinated two million people in two weeks, that is, one million people a week,” said Gounder. “At this rate, it would take us more than a decade to vaccinate all Americans with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine”
The country’s current vaccination numbers are certainly not where “we wanted to be at the end of December,” Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN.
“Even if you counted less … how much count could it be? So, we’re below where we want to be,” said Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “I believe that as we enter January, we will see an increase in momentum that … I hope will allow us to reach the projected pace that we are talking about.”
The faster this happens, the faster the country can begin to approach a “hunting season” for vaccines, where vaccines can become widely available to the American public, Fauci said.
“When you get to the point, where you can essentially say that anyone and everyone who wants to be vaccinated can be vaccinated, that’s when you really change the dynamics of the outbreak,” he added.
United Kingdom variant discovered in Colorado
The case was confirmed in a 20-year-old man who is currently isolated and has no travel history, officials said.
“We haven’t known for a long time about this new variant of Covid-19, but scientists in the UK are warning the world that it is significantly more contagious,” Colorado Governor Jared Polis said in a statement.
And the variant is “almost certain” in several states, according to an expert.
“I think we will see evidence of this in the next few days,” said Dr. Atul Gawande, a member of the Covid-19 advisory board for the Biden-Harris transition.
The Colorado traveler’s unknown travel history means that “that person found out in the community,” said Gawande.
“Exactly how prevalent it is is the real issue,” he added. “If it is spreading, how, how dominant is it?”
“We know that it is a more contagious variant and this is a serious concern if it is only now beginning to spread, since our hospitals and ICUs, in particular, are already being filled.”
So far, at least 26 countries have reported cases of the variant, according to CNN reports.
More than 2 million children have had Covid-19
Meanwhile, cases of Covid-19 in children continue to increase in the United States.
A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association said there were more than 178,000 new cases of Covid-19 among children in the week ending December 24.
This brings the total number of child cases to more than two million. Children now account for about 12.4% of all Covid-19 cases in the USA.
Between 10 and 24 December, the report reports that there was a 22% increase in cases among children.
