US warships in the Persian Gulf suffered outbreaks of COVID-19

Two US warships in the Persian Gulf have suffered outbreaks of coronavirus, announced the 5th US Navy Fleet on Friday.

The ships are likely to be out of action for a few days in Bahrain, while tensions with Iran increase after US air strikes by Iran-backed forces in Syria.

The amphibious transport ship USS San Diego was planning a visit to the port of Bahrain when testing began. About a “dozen” crew members have had positive results, says the Navy.

The guided missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea was forced to make an unscheduled stopover, also for Bahrain, home to the U.S.’s 5th Fleet, officials said. There are “several people under investigation,” the Navy said, without revealing further details.

There are 600 sailors and marines on board the USS San Diego and 380 sailors on board the USS Philippine Sea.
