US stocks reach slightly higher

The main US stock indices rose slightly on Tuesday, although weakness in the shares of technology and social media companies limited their gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 60.00 points, or 0.2%, to close at 3,1068.69, after oscillating between small gains and losses throughout the day.

The broad-based S&P 500 rose 1.58 points, or less than 0.1%, to 3801.19. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 36.00 points, or 0.3%, to 13072.43.

All three indexes closed at record highs on Friday, but fell back earlier this week.

Investors expect stocks to recover this year as vaccines and new government spending help the economy recover from the disruption caused by the pandemic. Still, some are bracing for volatility in the coming months amid risks from high ratings in market shares, high rates of coronavirus cases and political uncertainty after last week’s attack on Capitol Hill.
