Early last week, the Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) approved Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine for emergency use, potentially adding the second vaccine to America’s mass vaccination effort against a violent pandemic.

Before that, the FDA approved the emergency use authorization for a Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

Moderna’s vaccine is based on the same technology as Pfizer – mRNA. The real virus is not embedded in these vaccines and people who get the vaccines cannot get it. Instead, the vaccine contains a piece of genetic code that trains the body’s immune system to recognize the protein spike on the surface of the Covid-19 virus and helps build an organic defense when the attack occurs.
