The final curtain came down at the Sunset Boulevard theater of the Upright Citizens Brigade. The comedy troupe says the location was sold because the group “was unable to pay the mortgage during the prolonged strike”.
News about the UCB Theater comes eight months after the troupe founded by Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh and others closed down in New York. The group said on social media, however, that “it is still working to keep Franklin [Avenue] space and we hope to have legal permission to meet again. ”UCB notes that digital classes will continue.
The 30-year-old sketch improvisation and comedy troupe is led by co-founders Poehler, Walsh, Matt Besser and Ian Roberts, who wrote: “We know that this theater was home to so many, and so many people were responsible for helping him grow up. We want to thank all of these people and the New York community who were also significantly affected by the recent closings. ”See his Instagram post below.
The UCB theater and training center in Hell’s Kitchen closed in late April, when the coronavirus pandemic hit New York. Poehler, Walsh, Besser and Roberts at the time called it “a heart-breaking but necessary decision”.
