UPDATE: APSU nursing student killed in Cumberland River accident

Update, 17:40: The family issued the following statement to Clarksville Now, including an appeal for information about the wreck.

“We are extremely heartbroken and perplexed to hear this news. Jasonah was a sweet, loving and intelligent young woman. She was so excited about her first year at APSU. Jasonah is from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and graduated from LaVergne High School, near Nashville. She was studying to become a pediatric nurse. If anyone has any details regarding the events leading up to the accident, please let us know. ”

The statement came from Crawford’s aunt, Devita Jackson, on behalf of Crawford’s mother, Latishia Dowdy.

Update, 17h: The driver for the Nissan found on the Cumberland River was Jasonah Crawford, 18, a student at Austin Peay State University, according to his family.

Crawford was a freshman at APSU and worked at Electrolux in Springfield, said his aunt Devita Jackson.

Her family was looking for her several days after the accident. She was driving a gray Nissan Altima, which matches the description of the vehicle that the divers found.

Jackson said the family was notified on Sunday after police identified Crawford.

The recovery effort began this morning at 10 am on Sunday, according to CFR captain Michael Rios.

Montgomery County EMS, Montgomery County Rescue Squad, Water Dogs Scuba and Safety, Clarksville Fire Rescue, Clarksville Police Department, Montgomery County EMA, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Clarksville Street Department, US Coast Towing, TC Towing and Jones Brothers Towing participated in the event.

Divers EMS and Water Dogs found the engine block at around 11:30 am. The divers searched the area around the site and found the vehicle shortly afterwards, Rios said.

The driver was the only person found in the car.

This is still an open and ongoing investigation, police said.

Update, 14h10: The vehicle was pulled from the river. The car was upside down when it was pulled out of the water.

The car is a gray Nissan sedan with an occupant, who has passed away, said CFR captain Michael Rios. Extraction is in progress.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The search teams confirmed on Sunday that they found the vehicle that fell on the Cumberland River on Tuesday night.

The conditions allowed divers to safely enter Cumberland to search for the vehicle, and the vehicle was located, said Captain Michael Rios of Clarksville Fire Rescue on Sunday.

At 12:45 pm, Riverside Drive was closed from Commerce Street to Crossland Avenue so that teams could pick up the vehicle.

Strong currents in Cumberland and cold weather have made conditions very dangerous for divers to continue to recover in recent days.

Just before 6 pm Tuesday, witnesses reported seeing a vehicle leave the highway and enter the Cumberland River near Riverside Drive and West Washington Street, just north of the RJ Corman Bridge, according to police detective Michael Patterson.

The Clarksville police, the Clarksville Fire Department, the Montgomery County Rescue Squadron and the Montgomery County EMS were involved in the search until about 10 pm Tuesday, when it was canceled until morning.
