After four seasons at times strange and often hailed on HBO, Isafe will reach its conclusion with the next fifth season.
“Prentice and I are very grateful that HBO believed in our program from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through to the end,” co-creator and star Issa Rae told Emmy-nominated comedy Deadline Today that she produced with Prentice Centavo.
“We’ve always planned to tell this story over five seasons, but we couldn’t have gotten this far without the tremendous support from our audience,” the best seller The misadventures of the strange black girl added author and recently appointed member of the Television Academy Executive Committee.
“I feel blessed beyond measure for ending the stories of our characters, at least on the screen.”

With all their scripts completed, the fifth and final season of Insecure should go into production later this month. Starring its main Rae cast, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell and Amanda Seales, the show will return later this year, HBO said.
Based on Rae’s online series Strange Black Girl, Larry Wilmore co-created Insecure focused on Issa’s Los Angeles-based trials, tribulations and upheavals while she negotiated love, life and friendship (especially with Orji in the role of Molly). The Golden Globe nominee and NAACP Image Award series debuted on HBO in October 2016 and concluded its fourth season with a directed and final penny written last June.
Insecure was renewed for what is now its last season in May 2020 by AT&T-owned HBO.
“Issa turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy,” premium cabler Amy Gravitt’s programming EVP said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The show is as incisive as it is sincere and has resonated strongly with its audience because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina, the cast and the writers put into it,” continued the executive. “This talented team has designed a brilliant final season for Insecure and we hope to have many more stories to tell with this unique group of employees. “
Of that group, Insecure it is EP’d by Rae, Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, Amy Aniobi and Jim Kleverweis.
Even with Rae devastating as a producer and creator in new arenas, the boldness and vulnerability of Insecure will be missed. To paraphrase Rae’s character at the end of season 4, it was a lot – in the best way.
