The University of South Carolina said it was investigating whether a student participated in the Capitol riots last week, where five people died and dozens were already arrested.

The school received social media reports alleging that a student was part of a group of pro-Trump protesters who invaded the Capitol in Washington DC on January 6, temporarily interrupting Congressional confirmation of the presidential election.

The school did not identify the student, but said university leaders were “aware of social media and other reports that a student may have been present” during last week’s attack on Capitol Hill, said Uof SC spokesman, Jeff Stensland, in an email to Greenville News Anderson Independent Mail.

“We are currently coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation – the main law enforcement agency – and will take appropriate action,” said Stensland.

The school’s police force and the conduct office are investigating the matter, Stensland said.

One student was not positively identified by the FBI.

There were no known arrests in South Carolina related to the riots on Wednesday.

The FBI accused at least 170 people in connection with the unrest that resulted from a demonstration on the National Mall, where President Donald Trump spoke to a crowd of supporters.
