United Yemeni twins fly to Jordan for separation surgery

Two-month-old Siamese boys from Yemen flew to Jordan over the weekend to undergo separation surgery, according to a video of their journey.

The twins, Mohammed and Ahmed, were born on December 17 united in the rib cage and stomach.

Her father said the family is receiving international treatment with the help of UNICEF because of the limited resources in Yemen’s health system.

Yemen was dominated by a civil war for six years, creating what the United Nations calls “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis”.

The boys’ 35-year-old mother works as a street vendor in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, UNICEF said.

The agency said that “private donors” are covering the cost of the surgery.

“After weeks of preparations, we are happy that the twins are now in a hospital in Jordan to be operated on,” said Philippe Duamelle, UNICEF representative in Yemen, in a statement.

“[The twins] are now in the safe hands of a team of specialist surgeons. We hope to see you back in Sana’a in good health soon. “
