NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Travelers at Charleston International Airport will have additional flight options to six Midwestern cities starting in May.

United Airlines will add nonstop service from Charleston to Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio; Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Milwaukee starting May 27, said Charleston International Airport spokesman Spencer Pryor.

The new seasonal service is based on United’s growing presence in Charleston, said Pryor.

“United is once again adding to the excitement at Charleston International Airport,” said Charleston County Aviation Authority Chief Executive Officer and CEO Elliot Summey. The CCAA owns and operates the airport. “We remain committed to increasing service with our existing operators and the new service offered by United will be welcomed by travelers from Charleston. We have been on a steady path to return to pre-COVID passenger volume and United’s announcement today will bring us one step closer. “

The addition of six new destinations more than doubles United’s direct flights from Charleston and adds 18 weekly flights.

This will be the first non-stop service from Charleston to Milwaukee.

“During the pandemic, United was strategic and careful in adding flights to the destinations that our customers want to visit,” said United Airplines spokesman Ankit Gupta. “With many customers now starting to plan their summer vacations in places where they can enjoy their time outdoors, we hope to offer new services to major cities in the Midwest and East Coast.”

As the airline rebuilds its schedule to meet growing travel demand, adding seasonal point-to-point flights is just one way United is finding opportunities to add new and interesting services.

Explore Charleston CEO Helen Hill called United “a great partner for many years”.

“Ohio has consistently been a major home state for visitors to Lowcountry. We are thrilled to welcome our inaugural nonstop service to Milwaukee, as well as additional options for residents of Indianapolis and Pittsburgh to conveniently enjoy the unique attributes of our region, ”said Hill. “At the same time, we realize that these flights improve access for Charleston area residents with family, friends and business contacts in those markets.”

On five of the six new routes, United Airlines will use the CRJ-550 aircraft. The CRJ-550 is part of United’s commitment to offering more premium-heavy aircraft, as the plane offers 10 seats in first class, 20 seats in Economy Plus and 20 in Economy, plus roof storage to accommodate all passengers who travel hand luggage.
