Unexploded bomb found in apartment in Kalamazoo’s Westnedge Hill neighborhood

KALAMAZOO, MI – An unexploded bomb was found in an apartment complex in Kalamazoo on Sunday afternoon.

The bomb was found around 2:15 pm on Sunday, March 21, by a person cleaning a parking lot at Cherry Knoll, 717 Whitcomb St., an apartment complex in the Westnedge Hill neighborhood, Commander of the Public Security Bomb Squad in Kalamazoo, Lieutenant David Moran said.

There were unexploded chemicals inside the device, along with matches and razor blades, which were probably part of the detonation device, said Moran.

The bomb was deactivated remotely, he said. The Kalamazoo County Hazardous Materials Response team assisted.

A cleaning person thought the bottle looked suspicious, moving it to a trash can and called 911. Moving suspicious-looking items is not safe, said Moran, and people should call 911 without touching the item.

While talking to people in the area, the police learned that residents heard an explosion around 1 or 2 in the morning of that day, said Moran. People should always call 911 when they hear an explosion, because it can disrupt other things.

“Usually, explosions are not good,” he said. “I don’t know any of them.”

There are no continuing safety concerns for residents, said Moran.

The police have no suspects at the moment. Anyone with information should call the Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
