Understand SC: The design of the South Carolina flag that everyone hated | Understand SC

South Carolinians are very familiar with their flag.

The simple but well-loved combination of the indigo backdrop, the crescent moon and the palm tree is everywhere. It doesn’t just hang on flagpoles. It’s on T-shirts and beer koozies and ties.

But few people knew that the state didn’t really have a standardized flag design for about 80 years.

That is why a group of historians proposed to draw an official design, based on the history of the state and the origins of the flag. After exhaustive research, they shared their final design choice with The Post and Courier.

AND. . . people hated it.

Reporter Avery Wilks explained to us why people didn’t like the design so much and what it can say about the state’s connection to its flag.

We also heard from Scott Malyerck, who was on the design committee, about why they chose the design they did and how the flood of criticism can really be a good thing for their effort.
