Understand SC: Corruption is rampant in SC. This is how it is being discovered. | Uncovered

When people are not looking, corruption can spread.

That’s why The Post and Courier launched “Uncovered”, a project that shows misconduct in South Carolina, especially in small towns.

For the first installment of the ongoing investigative series, reporters combed through thousands of pages of records of spending and ethical complaints, interviewed whistleblowers and consulted researchers and watchdogs about solutions. And the work has just started.

This week, reporters from the “Uncovered” team shared a behind-the-scenes view of their stories and what they have brought to light so far.

Tony Bartelme explained the project’s origins and showed us what an extravagant conference trip is like with board members from one of the five state natural gas authorities. And he deciphered why the loss of local news sources can make it more possible for public officials to get away with questionable conduct.

Avery Wilks shared some background on South Carolina’s ethics laws and why many asked for their strengthening.

Listeners will also learn what to expect from “Discovered” and how they can get involved.
