WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A second Kansas case from United Kingdom or United Kingdom, variant known as B.1.1.7, was identified in Sedgwick County, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, confirmed in a press release on Monday afternoon.
The first case was identified earlier this month at Fort Hays State University in Ellis County.
“A case investigation was conducted and close contacts were notified. The investigation of the case indicates that the person was probably infected during a trip to another state. More details about the patient, including demographic data, will not be released, ”said the KDHE.
The state said the variant was determined through tests at KDHE laboratories.
“This finding does not change our public health recommendations. We continue to encourage people to take appropriate precautions. This includes the use of a mask that fits comfortably on the nose and face and has multiple layers of fabric or thinner layer masks with an additional fabric face mask to improve fit. Kansans must also follow isolation and quarantine recommendations, practice physical detachment, good hygiene, stay at home if sick and get the vaccine if they can, as soon as the supply is sufficient, ”said KDHE Secretary Dr. Lee Norman .
Sedgwick County Health Director Adrienne Byrne added that “this discovery also shows the importance of testing for COVID-19”.
