UK vaccine unit evacuated after ‘suspicious packaging’ found

North Wales police advised the public to avoid the area.

LONDON – Police in North Wales are responding to an ongoing incident after a suspicious package was received at a major factory in the UK’s vaccine supply chain.

“Wockhardt UK in Wrexham this morning received a suspicious package for the website,” the company said in a statement to ABC News. “All relevant authorities were immediately notified and hired. On the advice of an expert, we partially evacuated the site pending a full investigation. The safety of our employees and business continuity remains paramount.”

North Wales police told ABC News that this is a “continuous incident”.

“We are currently dealing with an ongoing incident at the Wrexham Industrial Estate,” said a spokesman. “The roads are closed and we ask the public to avoid the area until further notice.”

Police have not confirmed whether the bomb disposal unit has been dispatched to the scene.

The Wockhardt plant is a key point in the UK supply chain. After being manufactured in Oxford and Staffordshire in England, the University of Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine is taken to Wrexham to be put into vials before distribution.

The factory was visited by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in November, when he was told that the factory could produce up to 300 million doses of vaccine per year.
