A hospital in the UK announced on Wednesday that it will start using language that includes more transgender and non-binary people on its premises.
“Our approach was carefully considered to include trans and non-binary parturients, without excluding the language of women or motherhood,” said Brighton and Sussex Maternity on Twitter.

The tweet included a 19-page document which has a gender-inclusive language table that the team can use.
In the table, “breast milk” changes to “human milk”, “breastfeeding” changes to “breastfeeding” and “maternal” changes to “perinatal”.
Other words, including mother, woman and maternal consent, have been changed to include more transgender and non-binary people.
On a demonstration, University hospitals in Brighton and Sussex said they are focused on being more inclusive with midwives who care for transgender people who give birth.
“I look forward to a time when this inclusive care standard is in fact business as usual for the entire NHS [National Health Service]. That said, improvement must begin somewhere, and I am particularly proud of all the hard work that our service has put into this award-winning job, ”said Amanda Clifton, head of obstetrics.
