UC San Diego Health, San Diego County and the Fathers are teaming up to vaccinate at least 5,000 health workers a day against the new coronavirus, starting on Monday.

These partners, along with the city of San Diego, will run the “Super Vaccination Station” near Petco Park in an effort to safely vaccinate the 500,000 health workers in the region eligible for Phase 1A-Tier categories on the vaccine list California priority areas.
“The Super Vaccination Station increases our ability as a county to administer the vaccine to healthcare professionals,” said Nathan Fletcher, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors.
“The opening of this oversized vaccination site will be an important milestone in the recovery of COVID from the state of California when it opens on Monday. With UC San Diego Health supporting this new regional partnership, we will put vaccines in the arms of healthcare professionals much faster, ”he said.
The decision to start a large-scale vaccination site was made on Thursday and comes at a time when hospitals across the county are preparing for an increase in post-New Year infections that will challenge the region’s ability to care of patients with COVID.
The county previously established four distribution points across the region that administered hundreds of vaccines to healthcare professionals daily, and those locations will continue to function.
From Monday, the Super Station will operate from 7 am to 7 pm, seven days a week, for health professionals. Vaccines will only be administered to healthcare professionals who have made an online appointment at vacinationSuperStationSD.com.
The vaccination site is located in the Tailgate Lot, controlled by the Fathers, a space located on Avenida Imperial close to Petco Park. Health professionals must provide proof that they are health professionals when they arrive at the site. Health professionals will be able to stay in their vehicles to receive the vaccine and will remain in place for 15 minutes to be monitored for any side effects.
“Ending this pandemic requires the use of all available tools, from masking to testing and vaccination,” said UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla. “The expanded effort to vaccinate more people more quickly requires close collaboration with multiple partners – UC San Diego Health, the county, the Fathers and others. The unique combination of leadership, resources, experience and logistics in this partnership will deliver optimal public health outcomes for the benefit of everyone in San Diego County. “
Fletcher said the county hopes to eventually replicate the oversized vaccination site model across the county. No timetable has been set, but he said that if the model proves to be effective, and more doses of the vaccine are made available and individuals designated for Tier 2 and Tier 3 are eligible, having the super station model will be vital to distribute the vaccine to more people in a fast and safe environment.

The city will provide traffic control and security services to the San Diego Police Department.
“Petco Park is more than a stadium, and we are honored to help the San Diego community by providing the necessary space and operational support for the county for its essential COVID-19 vaccination efforts,” said Erik Greupner, business president of the Fathers operations.
San Diego County administered its first COVID-19 vaccines on December 16.
Tips for health professionals who make an appointment:
- Healthcare professionals are encouraged to first contact their healthcare professionals to request the vaccine and then make an appointment.
- Do not schedule an appointment if you have COVID-19 or are sick.
- Wear a mask.
- And forms of proof to be presented at the site include: employee identification badge with photo or other documents, letter signed by the employer on the facility’s letterhead and a photo identification document or proof of payment or time sheet from the employer’s health or home support services photo identification.
