Two women died after their car fell off a cliff and fell about 30 meters into the coastal waters of Bodega Bay, officials said on Sunday.

Firefighters arrived at the west parking lot of the Bodega Bay Head trail at 11:05 am on Saturday, after receiving reports that a vehicle with two women passed through the guardrail, said Captain Justin Fox of the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District.

Firefighters found that the vehicle had landed on its roof in the natural pools at the water’s edge, Fox said.

“We had to use ropes to get down there,” said Fox. “As soon as we were able to access the vehicle, we determined that they were deceased.”

The two women were not identified.

Firefighters called on a towing company to remove the car from the water so they could free the women, Fox said.

Dozens of people witnessed the accident, he said: “It was a very busy day in the parking lot there.”

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
