As I promised on the morning news yesterday, I’m here to make sure we get our weekly correction from Deshaun Watson and it really wasn’t even planned. Whenever it is time to cover the first post of the day, we go out and look for something interesting to write about and a great two-round NFL simulation sketch from Focus on professional football fits the project perfectly.
The Denver Broncos made just one move in this simulation and that move was exchanging a big draft for the Houston Texans for the services of a Deshaun Watson. Take a look at this compensation.
9. HOUSTON TEXANS (TRADE WITH DEN): QB TREY LANCE, STATE OF NORTH DAKOTA
REPLACEMENT! Houston exchanges quarterback Deshaun Watson for Denver for the ninth overall choice, 2021 in the second round, 2022 in the first round, 2022 in the second round and 2023 in the first round.
There are three choices from the first round and two choices from the second round, but no players. New Broncos general manager George Paton will have to rely on himself and his ability to find talent in later rounds during the first two years of work, but in 2023 things will start looking a little better and Watson will still have only 27 years old with plenty of time to build a dynasty around.
The negotiation, despite the cost, would make the Broncos instant contenders in the AFC. They have the young talent on the attack and several veteran pieces still in place in the defense to make an immediate run in 2021, as the mock draft analysis alluded to in a break in trade for both teams.
If Denver acquired the star quarterback, it would have a stupid amount of choice, despite the quarterback having a no-deal clause in the way. And the Broncos are willing to do just that. After all, Watson was one of the top three defenders of the 2020 season and is on his way to Hall of Fame status, according to research by Kevin Cole of PFF.
The Broncos’ acquisition of Watson would have the same impact we saw last season when Tom Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They would be candidates for the Super Bowl immediately.
As bad as this team has done in the winning column, I think we can all agree that they have a lot of talent on the list. Why they keep losing really comes down to the terribly inconsistent quarterback game of the past few seasons. Watson would end the immediate streak.
What do you think, Broncos Country? Three choices in the first round and two choices in the second round to have a franchise defender to cheer for at least the next decade. It would be nice to have some hope against names like Patrick Mahomes twice a year.
