Two killed and 8 wounded in Virginia Beach violence near the sea

Two people died and eight were injured on Friday in shootings in Virginia Beach, Virginia, police said.

Some of the surviving victims suffered life-threatening injuries, the Virginia Beach Police Department tweeted earlier on Saturday.

The shooting started after 11 pm near the waterfront, and eight victims were discovered, said police chief Paul Neudigate.

Shortly thereafter, more shots were fired nearby, and a police officer killed a suspect, the chief said.

A second person was shot to death in an incident that police do not believe was related to the other shootings. It appears to be “a separate shooting incident that we are still trying to piece together,” said Neudigate.

No police officers were injured in the shootings or response, he said.

In another separate incident in the area on Friday night, a police officer suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car, the chief said, calling it “a very chaotic night on the beach”.

There are no suspects in custody in the shootings, Neudigate said.

“We will be doing our due diligence to find the people involved in this and hold them accountable,” he said.

Six bullet patients were being treated at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital early Saturday after a shooting on Atlantic Avenue, the hospital said.

Virginia Beach is an annual destination for spring break tourists.
