Two Danish patients have brain hemorrhages after injection of AstraZeneca

Two people in Denmark suffered brain hemorrhages after receiving the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, according to several reports.

Two hospital employees received the vaccine less than 14 days before they had brain bleeds, Reported by Reuters. The Danish Medicines Agency confirmed that it had received two “serious reports”, but gave no further details on the matter.

The New York Times reported that one of the patients died and the other, a woman in her 30s, is seriously ill.

The Hill contacted AstraZeneca for comment.

The reports are the latest in a series of media reports about a small number of people suffering from blood clots after the AstraZeneca vaccines. The news also represents the second death in Denmark after the vaccine was administered by the Anglo-Swedish company.

Denmark discontinued use of the vaccine on March 11, after a 60-year-old woman died of a blood clot after the injection. Other nations, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland and Norway, have also blocked its use.

The vaccine has not yet been authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration.

AstraZeneca said last sunday that there was no evidence linking the vaccine to blood clots after reviewing 17 million shots administered across Europe.

The European Medicines Agency, the European Union’s medicine regulator, said on Thursday that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe and effective to use, but does not rule out a link with blood clots. The agency said it would add an alert to the product about the possibility of the side effect.

Reuters noted that some countries reversed their decisions in the midst of the EMA announcement.

The World Health Organization has recommended that countries continue to use the vaccine, saying that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks.
