Twitter to call strikes on incorrect vaccine information

(Newser)
– Twitter is expanding its system of misinformation warning labels and conspiracy theories to apply to posts about coronavirus vaccines. A blog post on Monday established the new rules, Wall Street Journal reports. Like its practice with electoral information, the policy will add up to user violations, calling each post that discloses incorrect information about strike vaccines. The first warning will bring a warning, the fifth will be a permanent suspension and intermediate violations will cause accounts to be blocked for hours or days. Users can appeal the punishment. “By using the strike system, we hope to educate people about why certain content violates our rules, so that they have the opportunity to better consider their behavior and its impact on public conversations,” said the company’s post. Twitter said it removed more than 8,400 tweets and challenged 11.5 million accounts worldwide since December, when it announced it would remove incorrect information about vaccines, for USA today.

Inspection will begin with employees pasting labels on tweets that are not based on reliable surveys or reports. Then, automated tools will get the idea and start labeling similar content. “Our goal is to eventually use automated and humane review to handle content that violates our disinformation rules for the COVID-19 vaccine,” said the company. “Machine learning and automated language processing take time to be effective.” Labels may contain links to public health information or curated content. Tweets written in English will be analyzed first. Facebook said last month that it removed 12 million pieces of content from Facebook and Instagram that violated its rules of disinformation about the coronavirus. Chief Executive Jack Dorsey said last week that Twitter intends to make moderating content more transparent, as daily. “We agree that a lot of people don’t trust us,” he said.
