Update: [01/08/21] Twitter has now permanently disabled Donald Trump’s social media platform account. After more reaction from Trump’s social media posts throughout the week during and after the violence in the United States Capitol building, resulting in 6 deaths, Twitter joins Twitch and Facebook to take the platform of the current president and ex -star of reality show in the final days of his presidency.
If you try to visit your page, you will see a blank page with Account suspended. Along with the ban, Twitter issued a statement on its platform stating: “After a careful review of recent tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them – specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter – we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement to violence. “
Original post: After a riot in the United States Capitol building, Twitch followed suit with other notable social media companies and deactivated Trump’s account. A Twitch statement cites the president’s “incendiary rhetoric” as the cause.
“In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on Capitol Hill, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel,” says the statement. “Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the president’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe that this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.”
Twitch is the latest in a series of tech companies that have taken action against President Trump’s accounts after riots he helped instigate. Twitter temporarily disabled his account for 12 hours, while Facebook banned him from both the social media platform and Snapchat for at least two weeks, “until the peaceful transition of power is complete”. Shopify also removed the Trump brand stores.
The chaos that erupted in the Capitol came after weeks when President Trump promoted false allegations of electoral fraud, and shortly after giving a speech to a gathered crowd of protesters encouraging them to march on the Capitol while Congress counted the electoral votes. Several lawmakers suggested that the president’s rhetoric, often shared on social media platforms, contributed to the violence.
It is not clear how long the Twitch ban will last. Last summer, Twitch banned Trump for “odious conduct” and lifted the suspension after two weeks.
