Twitter exploits ‘undo sending’ feature for paying users

(Reuters) – Twitter Inc is testing an “undo upload” function that would give users a short period of time to remove a tweet before it is posted, the company confirmed on Friday.

Application researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who discovers unannounced social media features by looking at the sites’ code, tweeted an animation showing a tweet with a misspelling in which an ‘undo’ button was available before a short time ran out.

A Twitter spokeswoman said the feature is being tested as part of the company’s exploration of how subscriptions can work on the platform. She said that Twitter will test and iterate possible paid features over time.

Twitter said it is working on paid subscription models, which would reduce its reliance on ad revenue, including a “super follow” feature to allow users to charge their followers access to exclusive content to be released this year.

CEO Jack Dorsey said earlier that the site would probably never have an “edit button”, a feature that users have been looking for for a long time.

But Twitter has introduced more requests as users send tweets, such as asking if they want to read an article before sharing it, and experimenting with allowing people to review a response to the tweet before it is published if it uses harmful language.

The company reportedly included a possible “undo shipping” feature in a user survey last year, asking what features people would like to make available through a subscription model.
