Twitter is committed to reducing its reliance on ads as the main source of revenue. To achieve this, the social media company is thinking about new revenue streams. According to a Bloomberg, one of these channels is a subscription service.

Codenamed Rogue One, the signature has already been identified in the application code by a developer on Twitter. Bruce Falck, head of revenue products for the company, confirmed in a statement given to Bloomberg that the company “can include it” in its revenue mix improvement plan. There is no word on what it will offer (if it does), but an ad-free experience is the first thing we would expect.

However, paid subscriptions are not the only option. Another idea that is circulating is to put Tweetdeck behind a paywall. If you don’t know, it’s an alternative web client that shows you several Twitter feeds at once. It has not yet been monetized, but neither is it maintained as actively. That may be changing as the Twitter product leader recently tweeted that was undergoing an “exciting review”.

Additional ideas include tipping, “undo shipping” payment and profile customization options.

However, it is better not to expect these changes to occur anytime soon. Bruce added to his signature statement that “they do not expect any significant revenue attributable to these opportunities in 2021.”
