Twitter bullying inspired the new film ‘Land’

Robin Wright needed to escape the newly discovered horrors that plagued society, so she found herself directing a new film about human kindness.

“I wanted to make a film at that time because there was a lot of pain in our country. … Just the ugliness that was happening in the world with, you know, the explosion of Twitter, ”said Wright, 54, during a conversation at the Sundance Film Festival’s Cinema Café on Sunday with Rebecca Hall.

“Everyone was a judge and there was a lot of bullying going on. I thought about the effect it had on children and how it is changing, psychologically, our cellular composition. All this darkness and evil. “

Wright ended up directing “Land”, which tells the story of Edee (also played by Wright), who leaves the grid by nature to deal with his pain after a tragedy and realizes that he needs other people to support him.

“You need human connection and kindness to overcome adversity,” explained the former “House of Cards” star.

When Wright was not busy starring and directing her new film, which will be released on February 12, she spent time during the pandemic watching old movies on the Criterion Channel.

“Land” opens at Sundance on Sunday.
