The Transportation Security Administration tracked nearly 1.3 million travelers on Sunday – the largest number of people to pass the agency’s security checkpoints in a single day since the start of the new coronavirus pandemic.
TSA agents surveyed 1,284,599 travelers on the Sunday after Christmas, the agency reported on Monday. It is almost half of the 2,575,985 people who were checked on the same day in 2019, but the biggest since mid-March, when fears and guidelines issued by the government around the pandemic COVID-19 almost paralyzed air travel.

TSA has not reported a greater number of travelers since March 15, when agents tracked 1,519,192 people. The agency saw 953,699 travelers the next day and the numbers continued to decline – reaching its lowest point on April 14 with 87,534 people, according to TSA statistics.

Saturday’s numbers also went up, with 1,128,773 travelers passing TSA security checkpoints, up from 2,470,786 year after year, the agency reported.
Meanwhile, AAA previously predicted that about 81 million Americans would travel by car during the Christmas season, while around 480,000 would do so on buses, trains or cruises.

Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University and Medicine show that as of Monday morning, the United States had reported 19,151,651 cases of COVID-19 and 333,326 deaths related to the virus.
