Trump will ‘have a place in history’ for the Capitol riot, but remains ‘the most popular figure’ in the GOP: Graham

Former President Donald Trump “will have a place in history” for his role that led to the US Capitol riot last month, but he remains the “most popular figure” in the Republican Party, said Senator Lindsey Graham on Sunday .

The South Carolina senator spoke about the impeachment effort against Trump on CBS’s “Face the Nation” program, claiming that Republicans will see this as an “unconstitutional exercise” and that any trial will result in Trump’s acquittal.

“More than forty-five Republicans will vote as soon as it is unconstitutional,” said Graham. “It is not a question of how the trial ends. It is a question of when it ends.”

Graham said that the longer it takes to overcome impeachment, “the worse for the country.”

Trump, who invited supporters to the nation’s capital and told them the election could be overturned, did not commit a crime, according to Graham.

Despite this, Graham said that Trump is still the face of the Republican Party and that his policies “have served the country well.”

“He had a consistent presidency,” said the senator. “January 6 was a very bad day for America and he will have his share of guilt in history.”

Graham said Trump needs to “rehabilitate himself as a politician” and believes the Republican Party will “roar” again in 2022 as a result of the Democratic Party’s changes in immigration policy.
