The president is expected to award the California Republican the Freedom Medal on Monday, the newspapers reported, citing officials familiar with the plans. Nunes has been a staunch ally and supporter of Trump throughout his presidency.

The Washington Post was the first to report that Nunes and Jordan should receive the medals in the final days of Trump’s presidency.
The award aims to recognize “exceptional contributions” to national security, world or cultural peace and other “significant” endeavors. Previous presidents gave the Medal of Freedom to members of Congress, but usually at the end of their career in public service or for something unrelated to their service in Congress, the Times noted.
Both Nunes and Jordan defended Trump during the Justice Department’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and during the 2019 House impeachment investigation – investigations that Trump labeled a “witch hunt”.
The two Republicans supported the president, spreading unfavorable information about Justice Department investigators and vehemently condemning Democrats during impeachment inquiry hearings for investigating Trump for trying to pressure Ukraine to investigate the now-elected president Joe Biden

The White House did not respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the reports. An official schedule that the White House released for Monday did not include an awards ceremony for Nunes, although it may be added later.
Trump launched the idea of giving Nunes the Medal of Freedom during an interview in October 2018 on “Fox & Friends”, when he served as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. At first, Trump proposed giving the deputy the Medal of Honor, which is only awarded for acts of military bravery, before correcting himself and saying that Nunes deserved the Freedom Medal.
“What he went through, and his bravery, he should receive a very important medal,” said Trump.
